Now that Charles has ascended to the throne, things are rapidly changing for the Royal Family – including the Queen Consort Camilla.

The title of Queen Consort is given to the wife of the ruling monarch. So Queen Elizabeth II made sure that Camilla gets the respect that she deserves as the wife of the King of England. In one of her addresses to the nation this year, the late monarch expressed her ‘sincere wish’ for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort after she dies.

Change ahead

However, according to recent reports Buckingham Palace is hoping to drop Consort from Camilla’s title. This comes after Camilla took the title of Queen Consort as a mark of respect after certain opinions were made about her marriage into the Royal Family.

Previously, the Queen Mother – Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra received the same treatment and were simply referred to by the title of Queen and their Christian name. As such, King Charles is hoping for his wife to get the same respect as his grandmother. Camilla is also one of the Counsellors of State and can now represent the King in cases when he’s unable to, so a name change may eventually be inevitable.
