What is it exactly?

Sad nipple syndrome is a seldom-talked-about phenomenon that can be very uncomfortable. This feeling arises when the nipples are stimulated, whether during sex or simply while wearing tight clothes that rub against the nipples. In some people this can create a feeling of discomfort or even turn into anxiety.

This phenomenon, increasingly discussed on social media, is still quite mysterious. Nevertheless, people suffering from this syndrome claim that nipple stimulation causes them such displeasure that they can become irritable. As a result, they take no pleasure in nipple stimulation, whether coming from kissing, biting or even simply caressing.

A genetic phenomenon?

There's still little research into the exact causes of 'sad nipple syndrome'. According to Metro, some doctors agree that it is due to the dysphoric ejection reflex. For instance, that can be seen when people breastfeed. Testimonies have reported feelings of sadness and emptiness while breastfeeding. In that regard, doctors explain those feelings by the reduced secretion of the pleasure hormone called dopamine that happens during feedings.

While this phenomenon may be genetic, according to Doctissimo, breastfeeders are not the only victims.

Stimulating the nipples releases oxytocin, the cuddling hormone. This sudden release of hormones can cause discomfort in non-breastfeeders as well.

Any stimulation of the nipples can affect mood and sexual function

People with 'sad nipple syndrome' find it hard to tell their doctors. Nevertheless, this syndrome may affect more people than we think.
