They also found that only 330,000 had been diagnosed. There are concerns that with growing cases of obesity in the UK, an issue commonly linked to sleep apnoea, this number may have since increased.

How do I know if I have sleep apnoea?

The NHS outlines the following symptoms you may face during the night:

  • breathing stopping and starting
  • making gasping, snorting or choking noises
  • waking up a lot
  • loud snoring

And those you may struggle with throughout the day:

  • feel very tired
  • find it hard to concentrate
  • have mood swings
  • have a headache when you wake up

How much could I receive if I am eligible?

This condition is covered as a benefit under the Government’s personal independence payment (PIP). There are two elements to this payment: the first involves needing help with daily tasks and the second involves needing assistance with mobility. PIP doesn’t specify which conditions make you eligible; the decision is based more on how your condition impacts your quality of life. It is available to anyone over 16 but those of State Pension age can’t make new claims. As for sleep apnoea, the total weekly payment you could receive is £172.25.
