While putting security stickers on shopping items is nothing new, the practice of putting security tags on essential everyday items began due to the cost of living crisis, and the subsequent spike in shoplifting.

The security tags on chicken were spotted by Tesco shoppers at the store in West Ruislip, west London, over the weekend. These tags were seen on bagged roast chicken, and a Tesco-branded Piri Piri half-chicken. Stealing these items will raise an alarm, and so stores are hoping these extra measures will deter thieves.

Earlier this month, Tesco Express instituted other security measures that saw meat products including sausages and bacon being locked away, with customers now having to contact the store employees if they want to buy any.
