CrossFit: Doctors issue warning after one woman's biceps explode due to too many pull-ups
Doctors have issued a serious warning against doing too much at CrossFit sessions, after this happened to one woman.
Physical exercise is usually great for your health. However, doing too much can have dangerous consequences for your health. For example, one woman sadly died after exercising at high altitudes. Another woman's body had an extreme reaction after she did too many pull-ups during her CrossFit sessions. Here's what happened.
One woman's biceps exploded during a CrossFit challenge
Jessica Johnson, a 25-year-old woman from South Carolina, USA, claims her biceps exploded in her arms after she attempted a CrossFit challenge at the gym. She started training for the intense Murph Challenge, which includes running for two miles and doing hundreds of push-ups, pulls-ups and squats, two months prior to the incident. After completing fifty pull-ups, her arms felt extremely sore and swollen. In the next four days, her arms did not stop swelling, she could not feel her hands, and she basically felt 'like the Hulk'. She explained on TikTok:
There was visible swelling. I looked like the Hulk. Everyone said 'We just thought you were super jacked or something'.
Jessica finally went to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the muscles break down and die, due to too much exertion. In extreme cases, it can cause large amounts of chemicals such as potassium to flow into your bloodstream, which can lead to organ failure, and eventually death.
Doctors advised her to stop exercising too hard
Jessica explained her ordeal on TikTok, saying:
The doctors were very certain that it was the pull-ups that caused it. They almost had to cut my arms open to release tension out of my arms.
After four days of treatment, Jessica was able to leave the hospital, but the experience was traumatic for her, as doctors explained some people have died because of it. She explained:
They've had people die from this in the past. I'm definitely grateful that I did not end up having any of those issues.
Jessica's doctors warned her about the very serious dangers of the Murph challenge, and she has decided to stay away for the time being. She took the opportunity to raise awareness on the changes our bodies go through as we age, and said it was a 'wake-up call'. Jessica said:
Listen to your body and take it easy. Yes, it's very good to work out our bodies. It's healthy to do that. But I think it's important to share with people now more than ever.
Working out too much and doing too aggressive of a workout is not good for you and not healthy. I think some people need to hear that.
