22-year-old school teacher dies from a stroke after exercising at high altitudes
A healthy 22-year-old school teacher suddenly died while exercising at the gym. Here's what happened to her.
Reports have shown that exercising can help you live longer, and healthier. However, accidents happen, and that was the unfortunate case of Ariatna Lizeth Mata Esparza, a 22-year-old school teacher from Mexico. While she was doing some squats at the gym, she suddenly dropped dead. Here's what happened to her.
Ariatna Esparza died suddenly while doing squats
Ariatna Esparza was about to become a nursery teacher, and she was set to receive her exams result on the day she passed away. The young woman, from Torreón, Mexico, collapsed at the gym after lifting too much weight and over exerting herself, according to local officials. She passed out while doing barbell squats, and while the paramedics rushed to the scene quickly, they were unable to revive her. Ariatna was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Ariatna's mother, Selene, published a moving tribute to her daughter on social media, saying:
My princess, my girl, you've gone and left us with empty souls and shattered hearts. Fly high, my love, very high. Here on earth, you were already a light guiding those who crossed your path, and now you are a light illuminating the angels. I love you, my princess.
The autopsy later revealed that the young woman suffered from anoxemia, a condition which happens when there is too little oxygen in the blood. The condition may have been caused by her over exertion. Despite having no underlying health issues, Ariatna also suffered from a stroke and blood clots, which stopped her blood from bringing oxygen to her brain.
What can cause anoxemia?
Anoxemia is a rather uncommon condition, and it is often brought on by exercising at high altitudes, such as in Torreón, which is located at 3,600 feet above sea level. When you exercise at these altitudes, your body needs more oxygen to function, and this can cause the death of some of your cells. Anoxemia also causes high blood pressure, which can lead to a high risk of having a stroke, as one of your blood vessels might pop and cause a brain haemorrhage.
The main symptoms of anoxemia usually include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, an increased heart rate, and cyanosis, which means your skin is turning blue or purple. In extreme cases, it can be lethal, as the brain stops receiving enough oxygen, or is filled with blood.
