Kyla vaped the equivalent of 400 cigarettes a week
On 11 May 2024, Mark Blight received a life-changing phone call. While his 17-year-old daughter Kyla was spending the night at a friend's, she suddenly 'turned blue'. The morning after their sleepover, Kyla had the scare of her life. She had always thought vaping was 'harmless', until her lung collapsed and left her struggling for air. Mark told Metro:

Kyla's father went into a full-blown panic attack as doctors thought his daughter might not make it out alive.
It was life-threatening. It really did threaten her life because she was so close to having a cardiac arrest on that Friday. They said she went blue. They thought she’d gone.More under this adMore under this ad
Her dad panicked as her lung exploded
Kyla nearly went into cardiac arrest when the paramedics took her to the A&E. She was immediately taken care of by doctors, who operated her for five and a half hours to remove a part of her lung which had exploded. Indeed, she had a hole in one of her lungs due to 'excessive vaping'. Since she was fifteen, Kyla had been smoking a 4,000-puff vape each week, which is the equivalent of smoking 400 cigarettes a week. She told Metro:
I honestly thought they were harmless and wouldn’t do anything to anyone, even though I had seen so many things about it. I just feel like everyone has that same view. But now I won’t touch them. I wouldn’t go near them. The situation has really scared me out of them.More under this adMore under this ad
According to Kyla's surgeon, these accidents are becoming more common as time goes on. Mark Blight explained:
I was talking to the surgeon and he was saying about these blebs that can form on the lungs. They think it is the throw away vapes that burst these blebs and puncture a hole in your lungs. Apparently it’s a big thing now. He’s done a lot of operations like this.
