An astronomer died for seven minutes after he suffered a stroke and cardiac arrest. He then explains travelling to 'the other side', and what he learned from his experience.

Humans have been trying to crack the mystery of what happens after death for centuries. Since it is rather difficult to ask the dead about their experience, many experts have turned to cardiac arrest survivors. Indeed, people who have gone through near-death experiences could be the key to understanding where our souls go once our time on Earth is up. An astronomer recounted his NDE on Reddit.

An astronomer died for seven minutes

One Reddit user posted a question for all to see, and the answers have been surprising to say the least. The question goes as follows:

Redditors who have 'died' and come back to life, what did you see?

A man who has been an astrophysics PhD academic for more than forty years explained he had been admitted to hospital in March 2023 for 'shortness of breath', which was actually a haemorrhage in his lung. Doctors took seven minutes to figure out what was wrong with him, a time period during which he says he died. During his cardiac arrest, the man suffered a stroke due to the lack of oxygen in his brain.

I woke up intubated and only semi-conscious for two days, then fully regained consciousness and asked, "What happened?" It is hard to correlate inner time to what was happening outside, but I can make some sense of it.

What he saw on the other side

During these seven minutes, the man explains he travelled to 'the other side'. This is what he saw:

I saw a series of three oval ellipses, one at a time, just suspended in a black space. The ellipses were all upright, as though they were suspended by a string (but they weren't), and they all had a thickness to them, like a ring.

The first ring was a representation of nature: mountains, trees, streams and clouds. The second ring was made of white-hot iron. The man explains he could smell the iron, and he later found out that blood smells like iron. The third ring was covered in beautiful blue and pink clouds, which looked like a sunset or sunrise. The man did not see a tunnel or a bright light, as we often hear.

He explained what he takes away from this experience:

I'm sure I was a horrific sight to anyone outside, covered with blood as doctors crowded around me trying to pull me back to life. But inside, all was calm. No pain, no discomfort, no worries. Accidents and disease may be terribly painful, but dying is easy. I'm not scared of dying, not in the least. Afraid of what comes before, sure, but nature makes dying easy.
