Here’s a look at how much Martin Lewis has made and how he became the trusted expert we know today.

Martin Lewis’ humble beginnings

According to Martin Lewis himself, who wrote an introduction on the website moneysavingexpert.com, the business venture started in 2003 and cost him only £80. Lewis explains:

Indeed, the website quickly became a sensation. Lewis explains that, at first, he would only send his ‘money tips’ to friends when he couldn’t include them in his TV segments. But what Lewis thought was just a cheeky email to friends ended up being sent to more people than he thought. He says:

I was at a party and people I'd never met before were thanking me for the emails. My friends had been forwarding it to their friends.

After that Martin Lewis set up a mailing list because, well, that was just easier. Very quickly the email was reaching millions of people. And that’s how Money Saving Expert was born. The expert refers to it as an ‘instinctive thing’ instead of a plan executed by a master.

At first, the tips were about saving money on bills, information on mortgages or insurance. Everything was relatable and very much based on what people actually needed. And that’s why Martin Lewis is successful. Lewis also gives more aggressive tips with the catchphrase:
