If Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive against Moscow’s invasion sees Kyiv take Russian territory, ‘there would simply be no other way out’ than using strategic nuclear weapons, Dmitry Medvedev warned in a social media post on Sunday.
He said:
Just imagine that the NATO-supported {Ukraine’s} offensive turned out successful, and they took away a part of our land: Then we would have to, following the president’s degree of 02.06.2020, use the nuclear weapon.More under this adMore under this ad
The original post referred to Ukraine as ‘ukrobanderovtsy’ - a term that Russians believe is offensive as it derives from the allegedly cruel methods used by the followers of Stepan Bandera, a nationalist leader who waged a campaign for Ukrainian independencefrom the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s.

Crimea is strategically important for Moscow as its waters don't freeze during the winter, allowing the port activities to continue all year.

Dmitry Medvedev’s threats come as Ukraine is reportedly close to making a breakthrough after launching its long-anticipated counteroffensive in the south of the country.
Although Russian news channels insist it is failing, Medvedev’s post suggests the opposite.
He also wrote:
Our Armed Forces, repelling the counteroffensive of the collective enemy, protect the citizens of Russia and our land. This is obvious to all decent people. But beyond that, they prevent world conflict.More under this adMore under this ad

This is not the first and not even the second time Dmitry Medvedev dreams about all things nuclear.
He once suggested that the situation in Ukraine could be ‘brought to an end within a few days’ by doing what ‘the Americans did in 1945 when they deployed nuclear weapons and bombed two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.’
During Wagner’s failed coup, he also said the rebellion could lead to a nuclear war.
