Vladimir Putin: How long can the Russian President stay in power?

Many analysts have predicted the downfall of Vladimir Putin in acoup, due to health reasons, or a resignation due to the debacle in Ukraine. However, the Russian President might be around until 2036.

Vladimir Putin's rise to power

Vladimir Putinbecame a politician after serving as a Spy for the KGB during the Soviet Union. His political career started in the city of St. Petersburg in 1990 where he served in various positions including deputy chairman, Metro reports.

In 1995, Putin became the leader of the St. Petersburg branch of the ‘Our Home - Russia’ political party and a year later he moved to Moscow.

Putin rose quickly to power when he was appointed by Boris Yeltsin as the acting prime minister of the Russian Federation back in 1999. Months later, in March of 2000, Putin was elected with 53% of the votes in his first term as the Russian President.

In 2004, he was re-elected for a second term with 71% of the votes. At the time there were limitations set by the Russian Constitution which prevented Putin from carrying out a third term before a break of six years.

This is why in 2008 he run and was elected as Russia’s Prime Minister a position he held until 2012 when he ran again for the premiership.

How long could Vladimir Putin stay in power?

Since 2012, Vladimir Putin who is now 70, is serving his third and fourth term as Russia’s President and it does not end there.

In 2021, he successfully pushed for a referendum to get rid of the previous constitutional limitations of only two terms in power.

With the new legislative changes, Vladimir Putincould remain in power until 2036 when he will be 83 years old, Fox Business reports.

Predicted fall from grace

For months there have been reports about the deteriorating health of Vladimir Putin, allegedly he has been suffering from chronic diseases such as various cancers and Parkinson's disease.

Yet it all remains speculations as no healthcondition has been confirmed by the Kremlin which has claimed Putin is doing well.

Throughout 2022, Vladimir Putin’s army launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, until this period he was largely seen as a unity figure in Russia.

What was supposed to take just three days to invade Ukraine is now into the eleventh month of bloody fighting in which Russia has suffered numerous military setbacks.

In fact, the situation has often been described as a Russian debacle, and recently there are reported losses of 175,000 soldiers, which has ledmany analysts to predict Vladimir Putin’s downfall.

There are analysts which say Putin will be eliminated, as his inner circle is plotting a coup, others claim he will resign and name a replacement to negotiate peace terms with Ukraine and the West.

This week, another Russian political analyst, claimed that despite the losses, Vladimir Putinwill fight until the bitter endand launch a new offensive in Ukraine and no one from his military commanders dare disobey him.
