We can only hope that the hero pooch got treats and cuddles. Sadly, life is hard for stray pets in India. It is estimated that there are at least 35 million stray dogs in the countryWild at Heart Foundation writes. The majority live tough lives, scavenging for food among garbage and possibly spreading diseases. Sadly, the risk of rabies has led many locals to fear, and even abuse stray dogs while methods of reducing the population include poisonings and beatings. Charities like Save Animals India advocate for mass sterilisation of strays but the lack of funding makes this initiative difficult to implement.
