Massive recall of cheese products issued due to serious health risks, here's what you need to know

Large amounts of Camembert and Brie Cheeses have been recalled this week from stores in the US and Mexico due to Listeria contamination susceptibility.

Todayreports that theUS Centers for Disease Control (CDC)released a decision on Sept. 30. to recall brie and camembert cheese products produced by Old Europe Cheese, Inc.

The products affected by the recall are believed to be susceptible to a Listeria bacterial infection which is known to cause serious health complications for healthy people, even sometimes fatal infections among young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

Multiple products are affected

Today cited an announcement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which performed an audit at Old Europe Cheese based in BentonHarbor, Michigan. According to the FDA, the company has announced a voluntary recall of their cheese products with ‘best-by dates from Sept. 28, 2022, to Dec. 14, 2022.

The CDC recall pertains to a dozen popular products of brie and camembert cheeses that sell under different brand names, and the full list of products and their lot number is available in the announcement.

According to the CDC, thus far there have been six infections from the affected products including five hospitalisations from 2017 to 2022. Their recommendation states that the customers who have the products should discard them and do a deep clean of the fridge.

Multiple states are affected

The affected products were sold in Mexico, and in six US states at over 25 vendors including Lidl, and Whole Foods.

In the US the recall from the CDC pertains to the six states of Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, California, and Georgia.

According to NJ, Old Europe Cheese, has suspended their production of brie and camembert cheeses until further notice, while working with authorities to ensure a smooth recall process.

The company has published a customer hotline to get additional information, via 269-925-5003ext. 335 during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET, NJ reports,
