Lidl issues urgent recall of chocolate product over choking hazard

Lidl issued an urgent product recall after pieces of plastic have been found in one of its chocolate treats.

Customers are urged to avoid eating the product at any cost, and if they’ve purchased it earlier - to hand it back to the store for a full refund.

Product recalls are relatively rare but they are very important to pay attention to in order to stay well and healthy.

Earlier this month, some cheese and chocolate products were urgently recalled over listeria fears. Another massive cheese recallprompted an alert from The Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Asda, Aldi and Sainsbury's had to remove some items from their shelves over safety concerns.

Lidl is recalling this chocolate product over health concerns

Lidl had to urgently removeone of its popular chocolate treats from the shelves as it was labelled ‘unsafe to eat’ by the FSA.

The sweet delicacy may contain chunks of plastic in it.

The product that should be avoided isFin Carré Milk Chocolate with Hazelnuts, and if you’ve got your hands on it earlier - do not consume it.

The treat comes in a 100g size, with a best-before date of 19.12.2023 and lot code L30821A112.

Pieces of plastic present a choking hazard and are especially dangerous and even potentially deadly for children, so this batch of Fin Carré Milk Chocolateshould be avoided at any cost.

Here is what to do if you’ve purchased the product

Lidl urged the affected customers to hand their Fin Carré Milk Chocolate back to the stores.

They don’t need to present the receipt and will be entitled to a full refund.

The company has apologised for any inconvenience caused to their shoppers and thanked them for their cooperation.

They said in a statement:

If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

Why it is important to pay attention to food recalls

According to the FSA, if there is a problem with a food product, it should not be sold. It then gets either 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

In some cases where the immediate health threat is concerned, like with Lidl-sourced Fin Carré Milk Chocolate, FSA issues a 'food alert for action'.

In their risk assessment of this particular treat, the agency wrote:

This product may contain pieces of plastic which makes it unsafe to eat.

If you have bought the above product do not eat it.
