Google warns millions to update their Chrome browser over risky bug, here's what you should do

Google issued an urgent warning over its Chrome browser after it was found vulnerable to a new dangerous bug.

The issue is so serious that it's been given a zero-day rating which means that it is being actively exploited by cybercriminals.

While Google is working on fixing the threat, the company keeps details of what it is capable of to themselves and urges users to update their version of Chrome to the newest one. Find out how to stay safe.

Google pleads with users to not ignore the warning

Google Chrome users' personal data could be compromised as security specialists identified a new bug that makes the browser vulnerable.

The virus was given a 'zero-day' rate which means that it is ‘being actively exploited ‘in the wild’ and that people have to act on it immediately to stay safe.

The tech giant is working on fixing the bug.

Meanwhile they urge users to check which version of Chrome they have installed and to update it to the latest one.

They said:

Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-3079 exists in the wild.

Anyone who uses this browser now needs to check that they have updated to 114.0.5735.106 for Mac and Linux and 114.0.5735.110 for Windows.

Here is how to stay safe while using Chrome

Google haven’t released any details of what the new dangerous bug is capable of.

But theyannounced the rollout of the new Chrome update which should be available across the globe in the coming days.

More information on the virus and vulnerabilities is expected to be revealed after the majority of Chrome users have made the switch to the newer version.

The company added:

Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third-party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.

To check your version of Chrome on your computer, open the browser and find More More at the top right. If an update is pending, the icon will be coloured.

If it’s green, it was released less than 2 days ago.

The orange icon means an update was released about 4 days ago.

In case it’s red, a newer version became available at least a week ago.

To update the feature on your computer, open Chrome, click More More at the top right, click Help and then About Google Chrome. Choose Update Google Chrome.
