Millions of people who face skin problems go online in search of answers to what their new rashes, spots, blemishes or other changes in appearance are.

But as describing the skin condition with words can be tricky, accurate search results are not guaranteed.

Luckily, Google just came up with a new feature where you can get a better clue about what’s wrong with your skin within seconds.

The tech giant announced that a new trick in its popular Google Lens app allows you to take a picture of your skin and match it with the most relevant data in its database, eventually getting an understanding of what condition you’re dealing with.

Here’s how you can do it.

What is Google Lens and how can it help your skin?

Google Lens is a vision-based app that allows users to search what they see via their smartphones.

Like traditional Google search but with visual data, the app compares an uploaded or captured image to other images throughout the internet and ranks the results based on their similarities to the user’s image.

If, for example, you run an image with a dress on it through Google Lens, the app will show where else this dress has been seen and where it can be purchased.

It may also rely on available data, like the product’s user ratings, to return such results.

In another example, if Goole Lens recognises a barcode or text in an image, it will display Google Search results page for the object.

Dermatology is a vast and complex field where visual diagnosis is essential for finding the right treatment.

The tech giant says that Google Lens’ newest technology has the potential to ‘democratise an entire sub-sector of knowledge’ for those who struggle with skin problems but don’t always have easy access to a specialist.

On the other hand, the new tech can contribute to clinician workflows giving doctors more data for a correct diagnosis.

Here is how you can search for your skin condition on Google Lens

Senior Director of Product Management for Google Search, Lou Wang, said that as ‘describing an odd mole or rash on your skin can be hard to do with words alone’, Google Lens offers a new way to help.

You can search for conditions that are visually similar to what you see on your skin.

Just take a picture or upload a photo of the problem area through the app, and you’ll find 'visual matches to inform your search'.

The feature also works if you're not sure how to describe something else on your body, like a bump on your lip, a line on your nails or hair loss on your head.
