The British Government is trying its best to support those in need and has put in place a new scheme as winter is on its way.

Since the cost of living crisis, the British Government has put in place several schemes to help people with their bills. The latest scheme put in place by the government is to help save money on energy bills.

The scheme will be launched this week and will see £1 billion spent on grants for homes ‘that have low energy efficiency ratings and are in lower council tax bands as winter approaches’, as reported by Yahoo News. This new scheme comes as it is expected that energy bills will rise this winter.

How long will the energy scheme last?

According to Yahoo News, this new scheme will last until March 2026 and will allow those eligible to upgrade their homes, including roof, loft and cavity wall insulation. The British Government believes this will allow households to save between £300 and £400 a year on energy bills.

Energy security secretary Claire Coutinho said:

The Government is determined to help families keep their homes warm through the winter months and save on their energy costs.

Are you eligible for the scheme?

Only certain types of homes are eligible for this scheme. You are eligible if your home is in the Council Tax bands A to D if your home is in England, or in bands A to E if in Scotland or Wales. Moreover, your home’s Energy Performance Certificate rating must be category D or below, as reported by Yahoo News.

If you wish to check if your home is eligible, you can use an online tracker, that will ask you questions such as ‘how do you heat your home’, 'whether your home has solid or cavity walls’ and whether or not you are receiving benefits.
