Lost and confused
Cody Weishaar and his family didn't expect to come across an abandoned dog when they pulled into a gas station in Tallulah, Louisiana on their way back from Florida.

The family were heartbroken when a worker at the gas station said the animal had been dumped there earlier that day by her owners.
The pooch was restless, and the Weishaars could see it was still waiting for someone to return, Newsweek writes.

The Weishaars, dog owners themselves, couldn’t watch the abandoned pooch suffer. They named the female pup Lulu, in honour of her Louisiana roots, and gave her food and water.
They said:
We always drive around with a bag of dog food in our car so we tried to give her some. She would eat a few bites and then wander around before coming back for more bites.More under this adMore under this ad
On top of Lulu’s heartbreak, she was also terrorised by a nearby homeless man who ‘would call her over and then run at her’. The pup was so lost and desperate, she fell into his cruel trap every time.
The Weishaars knew there was no way they could leave Lulu to fend for herself.
A journey home
The kindhearted family loaded Lulu into the back of their car and carried on with the drive home.
They commented:
She seemed so nervous. She was pacing back and forth in the seat. Eventually, my wife got in the back and sat with her and she laid down.More under this adMore under this ad
Caressed and ‘decompressed’, the terrified and ‘completely exhausted by fear’ pooch instantly fell asleep and didn’t wake up until the journey was over.
Lulu became a new dog
It quickly became apparent to the Weishaars that Lulu had not been living the life of any normal dog. When offered a leash, she tried chewing on it and ‘didn't quite understand it at first.’ Her enlarged breasts suggested she had been used for breeding.

Lulu is in desperate need of vet care
Sadly, Lulu is still in ‘bad shape’ and needs urgent vet care. After having been treated for fleas and ticks, she tested positive for heartworms. The pup is also set to be spayed to improve her quality of life. The Weishaars launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the vet costs.

They admitted:
We are actively looking for a forever home for her. But with each day that goes by, we are more and more attached.More under this adMore under this ad
