This pregnant pup in a shocking state was abandoned on the side of a major road. It was pure luck that she was spotted and rescued. Despite the ordeal, the pooch is now happy in a new home.

British bulldog Rosie was extremely vulnerable when she was abandoned on a major road in North Wales. She was not only neglected and abused but also expecting puppies. She would have died if not for a kindhearted member of the public who rescued her and took her to safety. Rosie has safely given birth and is now happy in a new home.

Found in a harrowing state

Rosie was discovered abandoned on the side of the A55 in North Wales. A kindhearted member of the public spotted her and took her to the Protection of Animals in Wales Society (PAWS) centre.

The sight of her abused body was heartbreaking. She was found to have scar tissue on her underside, deformed teats that were dragging and preventing her from walking properly, injuries to her paws, and an infected and smelly tail stump.

According to Steve Belgrau, the founder of PAWS, Rosie’s eyelids were ingrowing and causing ulcers on her eyes. Her infected tail stump was worse than the vets suspected and had to be removed.

Rosie was expecting puppies

Two days into her care, the charity was shocked to discover that Rosie was also heavily pregnant.

She was taken to the vet for a C-section where she delivered four puppies. Sadly, one of the litter was stillborn, but the other three thrived under the care of their mum and the PAWS team.

A happy home at last

After watching her puppies leave for their forever homes, Rosie continued to wait for her special human. She spent four months at PAW, and it was time for a loving family.

When such a family stepped forward, Steve Belgrau couldn’t be happier. He said:

Rosie left us for her new life, and wow, doesn't she look at home already! She's had such a tough time. Used as a breeding machine, dumped on a busy road whilst pregnant, emergency C-section and multiple surgeries to correct all of the neglect and abuse.

Despite ‘still some recovery to go’, all Rosie’s wounds are healing well, and she's got her happy ending.

Rosie’s story is one of many abandoned pups. She was lucky to get help but not every dog is the same fortunate.

PAWS fear that a huge rise in pet ownership during the pandemic coupled with the cost of living crisis putting a strain on people's finances means even more animals are being given up this year.

You can support PAWS in helping more animals like Rosie and learn more about their animal welfare and rescue work here.
