Shelter’s heartbreak over an injured and suffering dog dumped on a festive night

A sick and injured dog was abandoned on the street on New Year’s Eve. Nicknamed Teddy by the RSPCA officers, the pooch needed urgent vet care.

The charity is now appealing to anyone with information in a bid to track down the cruel owners.

‘Poor Teddy was left alone’

The boxer-type dog was found tied to a gate near the RSPCA's Southridge Animal Centre on New Year's Eve. It spent hours outside alone and must have been terrified of the sounds of the fireworks.

Nicknamed Teddy by the charity's staff, he was found to have several lumps and swellings including a large one on his side. That lump had ulcerated and detached and needed to be removed by vets.

The RSPCA inspector Nicole Pendrell-Smith said:

This poor dog, who was clearly in need of veterinary help, was found left alone and tied to a gate near one of our centres. It's heartbreaking to think that while so many of us were getting ready to celebrate the New Year, poor Teddy was left alone. We're just relieved he was found and is now in our care.

There was no CCTV in the area and Teddy was not microchipped so the RSPCA is now appealing to locals for help.

Pendrell-Smith commented:

Tough time for the animal welfare charities

Sadly, it's a tough time for the RSPCA frontline right now, which is why the charity is asking people to join the rescue and support them this Winter, so that they can reach more animals like Teddy.

The organisation has reported a 25% increase in emergency calls about abandoned pets. They put this down to the cost of living crisis with findings suggesting nearly one-fifth of owners are worried about how they'll afford to feed their pets.

Pendrell-Smith added:

We know times are tough right now - but there's never any excuse to abandon an animal in this way. There's loads of support out there for animal owners struggling - which is why we've launched a new cost of living hub, highlighting resources which could provide a lifeline at this time.
