One man got food poisoning in his penis

One man from Lebanon began feeling strange symptoms around his personal area after having an intimate moment with his wife. A few days later, he finally decided to visit a doctor, who gave him an unexpected diagnosis. His ordeal has been published in the Annals of Medicine and Surgery. Doctors at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon ran some tests, and discovered a bacterium, called bacillus cereus, on his penis. This bacterium is usually found in foods such as rice, cereals, milk, spices and cream, which has been left at room temperature for too long. The man had eaten a bowl of re-heated rice only a day before his symptoms appeared.

According to the NHS, it can act quickly:

Bacilius cereus produces spores that survive heat processing, and grows rapidly at room temperature producing toxins.

What to do if you get food poisoning

Doctors concluded that the man got the infection on his penis after having 'vigorous sex' with his wife, followed bya strong bout of diarrhoea and vomiting. Indeed, bacteria travels freely during intercourse, especially through little breaks in the skin and the exchange of bodily fluids, which is why personal hygiene is important.

The main symptoms of food poisoning include sickness, diarrhoea, gastrointestinal pain and nausea. These usually start to appear a few days after you have eaten food that has been contaminated with germs, and they often go away after a week, although that can vary. The most important thing to do if you suffer from food poisoning is to drink plenty of water, to stay hydrated. You should stay at home, and get some rest. Avoid going into work or school until you have not been sick for at least two days. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should also go back to eating very slowly, and only if you feel hungry.
