Woman fatally attacked by a great white shark while on an early morning swim

It is undoubtedly true that sharks are terrifying to look at. Their sharp teeth, large bodies and predatorial nature are enough to make anyone rethink twice before getting near them. Although not all sharks particularly hunt humans, there are some sharks who are notorious for attacking them. One of them is the great white shark, which recently claimed another human victim.

Holiday becomes nightmare

The risk of a shark attack is considerably higher in deep waters, however, it doesn’t mean that the shallow waters are 100% foolproof. An unsuspecting 39-year-old woman was visiting the sea on a ‘bank holiday weekend’ morning, never expecting that this would be her last swim.

As the woman was treading in shallow waters, she suddenly let out a blood-curdling scream as a shark bit her. The woman was horrifyingly ‘torn to pieces’ as reported by Mirror. Even though she was with a group of people, the shark singled her out and pounced only on the poor woman.

A fatal attack

As the woman endured the petrifying ordeal, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was contacted and called on the Central Beach in Plettenberg Bay in South Africa. Unfortunately, help arrived too late and the woman had already been dead after the arrival of rescuers. According to Daily Record, the body of the victim was spotted about 50 feet away from the shore.

The regional authorities have closed off the area and have embedded several ‘cautious’ signs around the beach. David Swart, the Bitou Municipality Mayor said:

We have never had a fatality at Plettenberg until 2011 and now we have had three with two in the last three months… We are researching into and looking at putting up a shark barrier and increased warning signage and starting our lifeguard’s season a month earlier than usual
