Prince William and Kate Middleton are officially moving to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate and their house has a rich history.

The cottage, constructed in 1831 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville, was once a teahouse for Queen Adelaide. It developed into a dreamy, upmarket guesthouse during the time of Queen Victoria, earning it the same reputation as Frogmore, the residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Since the time of Queen Victoria and Peter Townsend, Adelaide Cottage has undoubtedly undergone modernization.

Princess Margaret

The house once belonged to Princess Margaret and her lover Peter Townsend in the 1940s. Townsend lived there with his first wife Rosemary, so he could be on hand for the king in his role as equerry. The Queen and her sister would regularly go to the property to make tea in the gardens of the cottage with the Townsends and their young sons.

When pilot Townsend was appointed the King's equerry in February 1944, he already had a young boy named Giles and another child on the way. After three years of marriage amid the tumult of World War II, Adelaide Cottage became the Townsends' first real marital residence.

The Establishment was shaken by Margaret's romance, but she placed duty above passion when she called off her 1955 wedding to divorced Townsend.
