Morgan Freeman presented the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night and he had a glove on his left hand that left people wondering. Here’s why he wears a glove.

Seeing Morgan Freeman in a gloved hand isn’t out of character for him, yet fans were concerned to see their favourite star in an elbow-length glove. Reportedly, Freeman has a serious health condition that has stayed with him for almost 15 years and forces him to wear a glove.

Morgan Freeman’s paralyzed left hand

According to the New York Post, Morgan Freeman was in a nearly fatal accident in 2008 when his car flipped multiple times on a Mississippi highway. The medics had to use jaws of life [hydraulic cutters] to extract him from the car.

The 85-year-old actor was lucid, and conscious and joked around with some of the rescue workers. However, the accident left him with a paralyzed left hand and the glove he wears is a compression glove to keep the blood flowing. In 2010, he confirmed:

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a long-term health condition that causes pain all over the body. Freeman may have seemed to have come out of that crash unscathed, but his body is damaged on the inside. According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, symptoms of fibromyalgia include sleep problems, fatigue, depression, anxiety, problems with thinking, memory and concentration, and often emotional and mental distress.

Those who have fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than those who don't. This is also known as abnormal pain perception processing. It can develop because of trauma induced to the body and often comes between the ages of 30 to 50 years, but can also affect children and elderly people. A study led by Kings College London revealed that the condition is likely to be an autoimmune problem.
