Georgie Wileman is a New York photographer who has been living with endometriosis since the age of 13, but was diagnosed at only 26 years old. She chose to put her art to work to raise awareness about this chronic condition.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women; this chronic gynaecological disease makes periods painful, creates pain during intercourse and can affect fertility. Georgie Wileman is a New York photographer who was diagnosed at the age of 26, despite suffering from it since she was 13 years old. One of her photographic projects represents this disease. Entitled ‘This is endometriosis,’ this series of photos represent the scars left by this disease on women's bodies. A committed project that has the merit of not hiding the long struggle and long suffering that is caused by endometriosis.

For many, there are severe cramps during each period of menstruation, for others it is a pain that is almost constant that we try to ward off every day. And finally, for some, it's like we can see in these images; entire months stuck at home, most of the time immobile with constant debilitating pain.’
