Rishi Sunak’s privileged background and extreme wealth have been scrutinised by the national media ever since he became a high-flying politician, and the opinions seem to be divided on whether he is too well-off and detached from the majority of Brits to be a prime minister.
But it has been recently revealed that the Oxford and Stanford graduate used to wait tables before pursuing his studies.
More under this adMore under this adIn fact, his first job was in a celebrated local Indian restaurant in Southampton when he was a teenager. Kuti’s Brasserie, which was owned by Kuti Miah, a friend of Rishi Sunak’s parents, stood on the town’s waterfront and was a popular place amongst the locals.
It was reported earlier this year that the restaurant closed down, with the company owning it having gone into liquidation.

What other jobs did Rishi Sunak have?
According to Rishi Sunak, the job of a waiter was a significant step in his life.
He said to podcaster Harry Stebbings on The Twenty Minute VC:
What it has taught me is having a job, whatever it be, is important. I was setting up tables, I was clearing them away, cleaning, doing linen at the end of the night and setting up for the next day. It was not glamorous work, it was hard work, but it was amazing to have a job.
The future politician went to Oxford University to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics where he participated in an internship scheme at the Conservative Party HQ.
More under this adMore under this adHe graduated in 2001 and worked at the investment bank Goldman Sachs until 2004. He then studied for a Master's in Business Administration at Stanford University where he met his wife, Akshata Murthy.
Rishi Sunak joined the Children's Investment Fund Management in 2006, later becoming a junior partner. He worked in another hedge fund in 2009, Theleme Partners, and also directed Catamaran Ventures, a company owned by his father in Law.
