These two pages actually contain dirty jokes, thoughts about sexuality and sexual education. The manager of the Anne Frank house, Ronald Leopold, explains: “Anne Frank wrote about sexuality in a disarming way. She thought about it just like every other teenager”. And yes, despite her difficult situation, she was just a young and curious 13 year old girl.

At the start of the page, she wrote “I’m going to use this page to write dirty jokes”. Hats off to her for being so blunt! After this, she wrote out 4 jokes and 33 lines where she questions sex education and prostitutes. She then hid the two pages, as she was clearly scared that someone else would read them. Somewhere else in her diary, she wrote “Papa is moaning again and is threatening to take my diary. That would be the worst. I’m going to hide it from now on.”
In the newly discovered lines, Anne Frank explains that she doesn’t understand why adults are so secretive about sex and how proper sex education seemed to be really important. The Anne Frank explained why they shared these new texts, saying that “For decades, Anne has become a worldwide symbol for the Holocaust, but few remember that she was also a young girl”. These texts show how the curious and, in many ways, young teenager really was.
