New British Prime Minister Liz Truss: Here’s everything we know about the handover of power

Today, Monday 5 September, the new Prime Minister of Britain was announced. Out of Foreign Secretary Liz Truss or former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, it is Truss who has been announced the victor. Here’s what happens next.

Early morning Tuesday 6 September, outgoing PM Boris Johnson is expected to make a statement outside Downing Street, as reported by Reuters. Afterwards, he will travel to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to tender his resignation to the Queen at approximately midday.

A historic first

Then, Truss will meet with the Queen and be asked to form a government. It will be the first time in her 70-year reign, that the new Prime Minister will be appointed at Balmoral, where the Queen spends her summers, instead of Buckingham Palace in London.

This historic first was decided upon in order to provide certainty for the new PM's diary, as reported by the BBC. As the Queen has been suffering from mobility issues, the change ensures that no last-minute rearrangements have to be made.

Cabinet to be appointed

Truss will then return to London to make a speech outside Downing Street, expected at approximately 4 pm. The new Prime Minister will then appoint a cabinet.

Early on Wednesday 7 September, the new team of ministers will meet. At midday, the Prime Minister will go to the House of Commons chamber for their first Prime Minister's Question Time with Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition Labour Party.
