IKEA urgently recalls this popular item due to serious health risk

Swedish furniture giant IKEA ran into serious trouble days before Christmas after a piece of metal was found in one of its cakes. The discovered object means that the whole batch is unsafe to consume and is a subject to product recall.

IKEA and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) outlined what affected shoppers should do if they have bought it.

What IKEA product was recalled?

IKEA recalls its popular delicious Almondy Almond cake with Daim that comes in a red 400g pack. The product’s batch code is L2140, with ‘best before’ being November 18, 2023.

The FSA made a statement explaining the incident. It reads:

Almondy AB is recalling Almondy Almond cake with Daim because a metal piece has been found in the product which makes it unsafe to eat. This product is sold in IKEA stores.

The FSA reassured customers that IKEA was taking action to ensure the safety of customers, promising that point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this cake.

What to do if you purchased this product?

The notices that have already been spotted by Oh!MyMag in IKEA City in Hammersmith, London, explain that because a piece of metal was found in a cake, the customers are strongly advised to return purchased treats to the stores.

If you bought the product from batch L2140,don’t consume it but instead hand it back. You’ll get a full refund. Proof of purchase will not be required.

At Almondy the quality and safety of our products are our number one priority. We take the incident very seriously and as a precautionary measure, we are therefore recalling products purchased at IKEA stores, with the batch code stated above. We have identified what measures to take to prevent this from happening again.

Food recalls have to be taken seriously

While food recalls rarely happen, they must be taken seriously when they do. The FSA explained:

The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific actions to be taken on behalf of consumers.

The recall only concerns batch L2140. Meanwhile, IKEA continues to sell other batches of Almondy Almond cake with Daim in its stores and they are said to be safe to consume.
