Footballers’ salaries have risen massively over the last few years with the average salary of a Premier League footballer currently at £55,000 per week. Most of these contracts are a combination of base salaries and bonus, though of course players receive lucrative sponsorship deals as well.

However when footballers play for their country they receive match fees instead of professional contracts and this varies depending on the federation, as per TotalSportal.

The football associations in many European countries pay their national teams a fixed match fee which pales in comparison to the salaries they receive at club level. In friendlies and qualifiers, the English FA gives each player £1500 for winning, £1000 for drawing and £500 for losing games. However in major tournaments the fees are bigger.

The English team have however, created a charity fund called the ‘England Footballers Foundation support Cancer Research’ and all their earnings from the national team are donated to that.
