As reported by Reuters, new figures have emerged from the market which show that British shoppers have been increasing the consumption of frozen food in a bid to save money.

Customers switching to frozen ones

As per the latest figures reported by supermarket giant Tesco, British shoppers have on the whole, increased the amount of money they spend on frozen foods like frozen vegetables, fish and pizza.

The fact that they are cheaper than fresh versions of the same food, while being nutritionally and taste-wise almost at par, makes frozen items a very attractive substitute for shoppers who are looking to shop efficiently.

As per The Star, the same trend has been observed in Sainsbury and Iceland Food. According to data by analytics firm Kantar, the increase in purchase of frozen food is about 10% compared to last year.

Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, is quoted by the report as saying,

People are very mindful of value. Frozen food is cheaper and there’s less waste – and budgets are very squeezed now.

Other switches made by customers

Buying more frozen food has definitely been one of the main advices from savvy shoppers as well as nutritionists in order to be able to spend less on grocery while eating well.

The report also mentioned other substitutions that British customers have made in their shopping habits due to the economic squeeze. These include buying more canned goods, including canned soup instead of chilled soup, and shifting from fresh pasta to dry pasta.
