Little Miss teddy bear
Marth had already had her tail cropped before she underwent the ordeal at the vet for her ears. Ear cropping and tail docking are illegal in the UK and other European countries unless carried for medical reasons by a vet. The operation went successful and Martha seems to be recovering fast from it. Since she is too young to live in charity kennels, she is currently being homed by a centre’s employee before she moves out to her new family next week. Dobermann Rescue UK took her in when her ears were so seriously infected as a result of the botched surgery that they couldn't be salvaged.

Ear cropping
While ear cropping is illegal and protested against by many animal welfare associations, it sometimes becomes necessary to perform. For instance, in cases like Martha where her ears couldn’t be saved, it was the only way to move forward to put an end to her suffering. And to think that she will be leading a happy and healthy life in the future, it does make one wonder if ear cropping actually has any benefits.
As atrocious as the ear cropping practice is, it is said to be beneficial in some ways. Low hanging ears have been associated with some serious infections in dogs. As such, dogs with cropped ears are less likely to suffer from ailments of the ear canals as it facilitates more considerable ventilation. Additionally, cropping of ears helps it stand erect, which may be more aesthetically pleasing than low hanging ears.
