This dog spent a lifetime in an abandoned property, eating food through the fence. No one dared to try and rescue him until a desperate plea on social media by kindhearted neighbours.

Morgan, a senior Labrador, was dumped by his owners and left alone in an abandoned property. But dogs are resilient and forgiving. According to Henry Friedman who travelled across the border to rescue him, the pooch was ‘completely failed to’ by humans and yet, six years later, he still trusts them and 'wants to hang out and play a game of fetch'.

‘We don’t deserve dogs’

Henry Friedman discovered the 12-year-old Morgan through social media. People living next to the property where he was abandoned by his owners and left to live on his own, pleaded for ‘help from anyone who could’.

Neighbours fed him kibbles to keep him alive. Sadly, due to him eating food off the concrete driveway for so long, his front teeth got completely shaved down to his gums.

Henry said:

His story is what people mean when they say 'we don't deserve dogs.'

No one dared to rescue Morgan from the locked-up property.

In Mexico, the population of dogs is estimated to be 23 million, with 70% of them classified as street dogs or stray dogs. There are not enough resources or charities to take care of them.

The rescue

Henry, who is an animal rescue advocate, has a partnering rescue based in Ensenada, Mexico called Los Adoptables. When he learnt Morgan’s story, he immediately contacted law enforcement to help oversee the rescue.

He explained:

We needed police presence because without them there, it would have been an unlawful rescue, amounting to trespassing. This is probably one of the reasons he wasn't rescued sooner.

We are so grateful to our police officers doing the work to make a change! This guy’s name is Morgan and he has rescued...

When the shelter team showed up, Morgan was wagging his tail, with a water bottle in his mouth. He tried to toss the bottle through the fence, encouraging his rescuers to throw it back for him.

After being alone for six years, his spirit and trust in humans somehow were never broken. He is after all still a black Labrador.

Morgan is now in San Diego awaiting adoption.

Henry added:

He would do best with a family that is committed to making up for so much lost time and has the patience and experience of caring for a senior dog. He's an old black lab that would be great with kids and other dogs.
