Helpless puppy who can’t use back legs left to die in an abandoned rucksack

After being abandoned in a bag in the Berkshire countryside, a little dog is receiving round-the-clock care. The puppy was dumped in Finchampstead Woods in Berkshire by a man who was discovered by passers-by and reported to the RSPCA. After being thrown away in a knapsack, a little dog with no use of its back legs was left to die in the woods.

Helpless puppy

A man abandoned the cockapoo puppy, which was only eight or nine weeks old, in Finchampstead Woods in Berkshire on February 10. Witnesses who informed the RSPCA saw the man drop a Reebok bag. The RSPCA rescued the dog, now named Watson. Inspector Andy Eddy confirmed:

When they [witnesses] looked inside the rucksack they discovered the little curly-haired pup in a paper bag.

Vets initially had concerns as the puppy didn’t appear to be able to use his rear legs and they suspected a neurological problem.

However, they’ve run numerous tests and have been unable to come to a conclusion as to what is making him unsteady on his back legs.

Although the puppy seems to be unable to use his rear legs, RSPCA confirms:

He’s got stronger and is improving every day. He’s now bright and bouncy, and his mobility is much better.

Looking for help

Watson's health difficulties are thought to have caused him to be dumped by either a breeder or his owner. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the RSPCA. Watson is still looking for a new home. Inspector Eddy also confirmed:

I believe he may have been abandoned due to his health problems. Perhaps a breeder felt they’d be unable to sell him, or perhaps an owner was concerned about the cost of veterinary treatment.

The man seen dropping the rucksack in the woods is described as speaking in a foreign language, wearing a black and white t-shirt, jeans, and a baseball cap. Inspector Eddy further said:

Either way, I’m looking into the circumstances and would be keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident or who may know who is responsible to call us on 0300 123 8018.
