What does the M&M stand for?

According to The Sun, people have joked in the past that the M&M stands for 'Men and M'ladies' or 'Motor Mouth', but it actually has a far simpler explanation. It stands for Mars & Murrie.

The two names refer to Forrest E. Mars Sr who was the founder of the company Mars, and Bruce Murrie was the son of Hershey Chocolate's president William F. R. Murrie. They are the two important figures responsible for the creation of M&M’s in 1940.

The idea of M&M’s came about when Mars left for England to create Mars bars, and noticed people eating chocolate buttons with a hard shell to prevent it from melting. The idea stuck with him and so began the creation of M&M’s, which went on to be a huge success.
