Appearing on the pages of all the big fashion glossies, the 'fashion sock', or the 'pop sock' as others are calling it, were sent down the runways of Miu Miu, Prada and Dolce and Gabbana. But, you might not have known the history of this very culturally-charged piece of clothing that has had significant impact on societies centuries ago.

Cultural significance of socks throughout history
The undergarment, like much of fashion in general, has been linked to social class and status since the moment they were created.

Noblemen were showing a lot more leg than women were at the time and, with this, came the association of socks with respectability and male dominance as seen on portraits of Henry VIII.
How are socks making a comeback today?
Prada, for one, has always been a fan of stylish socks that are used as statement pieces in and of themselves. This season, its sister label, Miu Miu, sent down the runway an array of fabulously bow-embellished socks that were juxtaposed with sporty sneakers to balance out the look.
