Winter 2021 trend alert: fashion socks

Appearing on the pages of all the big fashion glossies, the 'fashion sock', or the 'pop sock' as others are calling it, were sent down the runways of Miu Miu, Prada and Dolce and Gabbana. But, you might not have known the history of this very culturally-charged piece of clothing that has had significant impact on societies centuries ago.

Cultural significance of socks throughout history

The undergarment, like much of fashion in general, has been linked to social class and status since the moment they were created.

In particular, European aristocracy like that of the 16th Century, used socks to flaunt their wealth. Noblemen were showing a lot more leg than women were at the time and, with this, came the association of socks with respectability and male dominance as seen on portraits of Henry VIII.

How are socks making a comeback today?

Prada, for one, has always been a fan of stylish socks that are used as statement pieces in and of themselves. This season, its sister label, Miu Miu, sent down the runway an array of fabulously bow-embellished socks that were juxtaposed with sporty sneakers to balance out the look.

Another brand that used the undergarment as a key styling component was Dolce & Gabbana. With their see-through and pantyhose-like knee-length socks, the Italian duo decided to accentuate the models' legs with the help of these skin-tight undergarments.

The best part of socks is that they're generally inexpensive, they're extremely versatile and they are just as functional as they are fashionable. So, whether you decide to wear them with heels and a dress, or to have them keep you cozy as leg warmers, have fun with them!
