A real-life elixir of youth, hyaluronic acid can be a real solution to erase the effects of time passing. Injections (to be performed by a surgeon, a doctor, or yourself) or in capsules to be ingested, hyaluronic acid is a gentle alternative to invasive surgery in order to tighten the tissues and deeply moisturise the skin. To have this filler injected by a doctor will cost between £150-300 per session while a course of 30 days in capsules starts from around £15.

1. Pain: There is no pain related to taking hyaluronic acid capsules. On the other hand, the treatment of hyaluronic acid by injections, even if done by a professional, can cause pain due to the needle used. Some will simply feel a mild discomfort whilst others may suffer more from the pain. This treatment is probably not to be recommended for needlephobes.

2. Result: Hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in the body, decreases as we get older and is therefore directly related to the aging of the skin. Injection or capsule, the goal is to bring a surplus of hyaluronic acid to compensate for the lack of it as the body ages. In capsules, hyaluronic acid will act as a dietary supplement to increase the intake in the body: it is a slower action but in the long term brings a "better" effect in general (softer and more hydrated skin, better elasticity of tissues ...). Injections are a targeted treatment that will plump specific areas of the face or body. Its action will spread for a few months and provide a younger-looking effect within 24 hours after injection.

3. Side effects and risks: Although hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body, injections, or capsules are not without risks on the body. For injections, it is better to trust a professional (cosmetic surgeon, dermatologist, or specialised nurse). It is important not to inject on a nerve for example. According to patients, there is sometimes inflammation in the zone of the injection and painful nodules can sometimes appear. Beware of prices that seem too good to be true. These might be concealing poor quality hyaluronic acid of questionable origin. Regarding the capsules, these represent a lower risk but as with any dietary supplement, avoid overdoses, and always follow the dosage indicated on the product.
