Julia fell asleep on her phone charger

Julia's case is super rare, according to her doctors. On a regular night, Julia fell asleep on her bed, and her phone charging cable got stuck under her leg. Feeling rested after sleeping like a log, she discovered a hole in her leg. The injury did not hurt too bad at first, but the pain grew over the next few days. She thought the wound would heal itself naturally, but when it didn't, she ended up going to the hospital to have it looked at. That is when she found out her charger had badly burnt her leg.

When doctors asked how she got hurt, Julia answered that she had no idea. However, she remembered falling asleep with her leg over her phone charger, which she told the doctors. The experts then told her the electrical device had burnt a hole in her leg. She explains:

I had slept on the bit of the charger that normally goes into my phone. The other end was plugged to the wall. So the doctor explained to me that, since skin is a light conductor of electricity, a bit of the electrical current had burnt me bit by bit. If only I had known that this common habit was so dangerous!

She will have a permanent scar on her leg

More than a year and a half since her accident, Julia still has a scar on the inside part of her knee, which she plans to hide with a tattoo. Most of all, she explained she has chosen to speak out to raise awareness for other people. According to Dr. Carissa Bunke, a pediatric resident at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, accidents like this one are rare but worrisome. She explained:

Generic phone chargers can cause burns or electrocutions. Teens and adolescents are particularly at risk of injury due to their frequent mobile device use.

There are some things you can do to avoid taking any risks. First, never put your phone charger on your bed, leave it on your night stand or unplug it before going to bed. Overall, you should never leave a charger plugged to the wall if it is not also plugged to a device. This will save your energy bill, but also avoid you getting burnt!
