Saviour turned killer

Although these incidents occurred in 1984, they still leave a chill down our spine. Genene Jones was a paediatric nurse who worked in a hospital in Texas. She was one of the nurses who cared for babies in the paediatric ward. As per All that’s Interesting, Genene’s killing spree began in 1981 in Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, when many babies mysteriously started dying.

The children were cared for by Genene, hence her shift was labelled as the ‘death shift’ by her co-workers. The string of the babies’ deaths naturally gave origin to suspicion around her. The hospital management replaced the entire staff rather than just Genene in order to avoid ‘bad press’. However, Genene had already moved on to her next prey in a new hospital, where she got a position easily due to her credible background.

New preys

She appeared to be confident in her killings and started doing the same heinous actions on the babies. However, what she didn’t realise was that she would get caught this time. According to Murderpedia, she was finally caught when a doctor found a drug bottle of succinylcholine full of puncture marks in the storage room.

The room apparently was only accessed by Genene. When questioned about her motives and whereabouts, she tried to justify her actions by explaining that she was ‘acting in the best interests of her patients’. She was immediately taken into custody and charged with the murder of 15-month-old Chelsea McClellan and sentenced to 99 years in prison.

As the investigation went on, more of her sickening crimes came to light. As reported by the BBC, she was suspected of murdering up to 60 babies. Later, 60 years were added to her previous sentence for an attempt to kill a 4-week-old baby. However, in 2018 there were possibilities that she might be released from prison due to ‘good behaviour’, but that was unsuccessful. Moreover, the authorities haven’t been able to prove that she killedall of the babies.
