A 6-year-old little boy, who was abused and neglected by his parents, astonished the police when they saw his orange pallor.

If you have ever wondered that the colour of a fruit or a vegetable can literally change your skin colour, then the answer to that question is, yes. This theory was sadly proved by a little 6-year-old boy, who was neglected and abused severely by his own adoptive parents, so much so that he literally turned orange after being force-fed mostly carrots for his meals.

Boy turns orange from eating carrots

Back in 2017, the police knocked on the doors of Clarissa Anne Tobiasson, 27, and Brett Parker Tobiasson, 31, in order to take a welfare check on their adopted, 6-year-old son. After being reported by an unnamed witness who came to deliver food to their house. According to New York Post, upon investigation, the authorities found that the little boy would be constantly locked in a dark basement with no source of light or sanitary bathroom facilities.

The boy also had a noticeable orange pallor on his skin, which was largely caused due to the carrots that consisted of the main part of his diet. As per the press release:

He would be required to eat carrots before every meal and if he did not finish them with a certain time limit he would not be allowed to eat the rest of the meal

Justifiably, the adopted parents of the boy were arrested and were charged with child abuse and second-degree felony. They also lost custody of the boy’s 2-year-old younger brother and the couple’s own biological 2-month-old daughter.

Can eating carrots actually turn you orange?

The answer is yes! Eating carrots or any other fruit or vegetable that is high in beta-carotene, in access amounts can gradually start to turn the colour of your skin into an orange-yellowish colour. As per the dermatologists at UAMS Health, the orange-yellowish discolouration is a condition called carotenemia and is most noticeable in palms and souls.

However, it is not permanent. The treatment albeit slow can effectively bring back the skin to its natural colour. All you need to do is either avoid beta-carotene-packed foods completely or have them in a very low consistency in your diet. This will slowly bring back your original colour, back in a few months.
