Liquid Green Gold

The mother of two, Ashmiry, shared images of her breastmilk before and after she caught the virus. According to a post on Instagram, she disclosed how, shortly after testing positive for the virus, the change in colour made her realize something was wrong with her.

But far from discouraging her from breastfeeding her baby, Ashmiry believed the coloured milk contained the nutrients and antibodies that the little one needed to fight off the virus.

The color change indicates that my body is making exactly what Rubi needs. Antibodies, extra fatty and just pure goodness. How amazing is breastmilk, it’s magical and I’m so thankful to be able to produce it especially now.

Ashmiry’s family of four, who all (except for one) tested positive for the virus, drank the milk too. She shared:

We all had some of that breastmilk. I had my own breastmilk. I was tired of being sick, so I was thinking, ‘I’m going to drink some of that breastmilk,’ and I did. I don’t know if it helped. Who knows

Consensus

Ashmiry’s post was shared by a child-focused first aid group on Facebook called CPR KIDS. Soon after the post was published, many concerned mums were wondering if it was safe to breastfeed their kids when while treating Covid-19. Health experts on the platform had this to say to the mums:

The COVID-19 virus has not been found in breastmilk, but can easily be passed between people. Speak to your midwife or GP for advice specific to your situation, and make the choice you are comfortable with.

Other mums on the page shared similar experiences to support Ashmiry’s choice to keep on breastfeeding her child. One Facebook user said:

When my 15-month-old returned a positive Covid test, I felt it was best to let her have as much momma milk as she wanted. I 100% believe that breastfeeding helped my baby get better and gave my body the heads up to avoid the virus myself.
