One of Saturn’s moons has shown the possibility of sustaining life due to the properties found in the molecules of the moon’s water.

The human world has evolved to the point where colonizing other celestial bodies is actually a possibility and not just a mere thought. With multiple theories on whether planets like Mars can sustain human life, this study suggests that life can be harboured on one of Saturn's moons that, interestingly, possesses subpar temperatures.

The icy moon

The infamous moon that’s being talked about here is Enceladus. It is Saturn'ssixth largest moon and planetary scientists suspect that it might have what it takes to sustain life. Enceladus is largely covered by ice which is where the shiny gleam of the moon comes from. The study suggests that the waters of this moon possess this essential property that is a core requirement of life.

The important property here is phosphorus, which is a significantly important element in the ‘genetic and molecular’ structure of organisms. The senior scientist at the Southwest Research Institute, Christopher Glein said:

We found evidence that one of the key elements that's needed for life on Earth should be present in high abundance in the ocean of Enceladus… It shows Enceladus is more habitable than previously thought

What does this mean for humans?

As much as water is abundant for a life force, it is not the only essential element for the sustenance of life. Other elements like air, earth, and climate also play a significant role.

From the data collected from the ice and water samples of the moon, it was noted that the water not only contains healthy amounts of phosphorus but also all the necessary ingredients required to support life.

The research helped scientists realize that Enceladus might be more inhabitable than previously thought. The answer to the question of whether humans will ever be able to settle on the planet is still unanswered. However, this study helps to reflect the possibility of a future on the planet.
