Here’s everything you need to know about tonight's Blood Moon total lunar eclipse, November 7

With the new month comes exciting new astronomical events. Although Halloween just passed, there isn’t any lack of events that will keep you occupied, especially astronomical ones. Moreover, if you’re a fan of moons then this is your chance to observe the lunar eclipse that is occurring soon with an unexpected twist.

A special lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse for this month is occurring on November 8th with a little surprise added to it. According to Space.com,the moon will appear for 85 minutes and it will be red in colour! The moon is also known as Blood Moon when it turns red. You can watch this celestial star without any telescopic equipment depending on your location.

As per NASA, the total lunar eclipse will arise at 4:44 a.m. EST (08:44 GMT) and it will start developing a red tint around 05:17 a.m EST (09:17 GMT) and ends at 6:42 a.m. The blood moon occurs when the full moon shifts completely under the shadow of the earth with only the atmosphere’s light reaching it.

Where to watch

This is one of the two and final lunar eclipses of this year and you can watch it from North America and parts of South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Parts of the ‘penumbral moon’ i.e. the phase when the earth’s shadow falls on the moon’s front and blocks the sunlight that illuminates the moon.

You can watch this phase of the moon from eastern Brazil and Argentina, northern Scandinavia and the Middle East.
