Dad recalls hair-raising moment he saw on baby monitor: 'I saw an arm reaching into the cot'

Becoming a parent is terrifying. New parents, especially, are constantly focused on making sure nothing happens to their offspring. Combine this with the fear of the paranormal and you have a very scary situation on your hands. That’s what happened to William Grave, who has shared his hair-raising story.

Parents hear stories like that of what happened to Madeleine McCann, and they worry about taking their kids on holiday. But Grave had no concerns as he put his baby son Xander to bed and went off to get some well-earned kip himself. However, when he woke up and checked the baby monitor, he saw someone - or something - else had visited his son in the night.

What William saw

When the young dad checked the video, he saw what looked like an arm reaching into the baby’s cot. William explained:

As a parent you just want to make sure they have had a good night's sleep which is why I checked the app in the morning.

I noticed there was some activity at 6.50am and we didn't go into his room until 8.24 am as he didn't wake up until then.

The arm reached into the cot next to Xander, and looked ready to pick up his dummy - but then it withdrew. William went on:

I was looking for a logical explanation behind it [the arm in the cot] and I must have annoyed my wife all day as I kept saying to her 'it must have been you’.

But the pair figured out it couldn’t have been, because William’s wife always wears a Pandora bracelet.

Paranormal activity in the house

William explained that he has lived in the house he, his wife and Xander live in now since he was 19. This is far from the first time that some paranormal activity has been tracked there. He has even written a book, The Lady in the Bay Window, about a ghostly figure who keeps popping up. She has been seen by five different people:

When me and my wife went on our first date she saw this lady in my house and my brother, work and school friend have seen her and they all described her exactly the same.

William suggested that the arm could belong to this woman. After the initial shock, he considered the possibility of a much more heartwarming potential. William lost his mother in 2023 to cancer, and he said:

It would be lovely to think it was my mum but I don't know who it is. I just know it is not me or my wife.

All of the proceeds from his book have gone to Cavendish Cancer Care in Sheffield who looked after his mother. If it isn’t his mum, William hopes it could be ‘a relative that has passed watching over’ Xander.

Believe it or not, this is far from the creepiest ghost story we have heard: there was once a woman who was intimate with a ghost 20 years before she realised what he looked like. Who knows what tale we’ll come across next!
