Fans are saying Matt Lucas' Boris Johnson impression was the best GBBO opening of all time

Boris Johnson... sorry we meant Matt Lucas, made his Great British Bake Offdebut last night. And, it's safe to say he definitely delivered on expectations.

Lucas opened the season by what was perhaps the best Boris Johnson impersonation ever seen, and fans have hailed it as the bestGBBO opener ever.

The impersonation was set up to mimic the Prime Minister's public address which so rudely interrupted the season premiere of Britain's best show. Matt stood at the podium with a sign underneath showing the slogan 'Stay alert, protect cake, save loaves.'

Lucas started off by reading the announcement upside down and coming up with one-liners like 'bake in a tent if they want to, but don't bake in a tent', before handing off the baton to Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood to correct the masses on the pronunciation of the word scone... or is it sc-oh-ne?

At the end of the mockery, Lucas whipped off his clever disguise and announced:

All that remains is for me to say, welcome to the Great British Bake Off!

Pineapple Upsidedown Cake-Gate?

But, it wasn't just Matt Lucas that did a terrific number on the show. The first episode of the season was also graced with a hilarious Louis Theroux cake and an incident that was almost as big as 'Baked Alaska-Gate'.

That's right, day one of the Great British Bake Off and a scandal was already underway. Contestants were tasked with creating retro-inspired fruity desserts before presenting them to the judges to be blind taste-tested.

But, everything got turned upside down when Sura saw a fly hovering near her cakes and swatted it away, taking most of Dave's work down in the process. Dave's cakes were knocked to the floor and were blasted into smithereens on landing, leaving only two little morsels to be judged.

Dave tried to remain calm about the situation but his horrified face said everything it needed to. Contestants tried to help the sabotaged man by reassembling his cakes but the effort was all in vain. Luckily, he managed to keep his cool, but poor Sura was absolutely mortified about what she had done and was still left sobbing.

Fans took Twitter to comment on the hilarious, yet unfortunate incident, one person stated:

Episode one of Bake Off and there's already been a sponge related sabotage. I am grinning in absolute elation. This might save 2020.

Another chimed in:

Who knew that it would take a Bake Off contestant knocking someone else's pineapple upside down cakes onto the floor to make me feel something in lockdown? #GBBO.

Sura actually went on to win the technical challenge, but the poor lass couldn't even crack a smile after knowing what she had done to Dave.
