This comes after the show was forced to take a 12-week break from filming due to coronavirus interruptions and promptly ran out of new episodes to air.
After being off air for almost three months after a consecutive 35 years of uninterrupted scheduling BBC bosses have joked that they're looking forward to 'season two' of the cult favourite soap. The announcement on Twitter read:

However, although the show is coming back it won't quite be on the same schedule it once was. The new episodes will be a little shorter at just 20 minutes long and will be airing four times a week on BBC One.
Speaking about the return of the show, Jon Sen, executive producer for EastEnders said:

He continued:
As soon as Albert Square reawakens the drama returns at a pace and, although working within social distancing guidelines has certainly given us some new challenges, I am incredibly proud of what everyone has achieved.
The show temporarily stopped production in March when the UK went into lockdown and many professionals were asked to work from home where possible. In June, the show ran out of new material to air for the first time in 35 years, forcing them to take a break from screening.
