Royals facing security threat from growing number of dangerous stalkers: ‘The rise is alarming’

Being in the limelight always has its pros and cons and even more so if you are British Royalty. According to new reports, the number of fanatics posing a risk to the Royal Family and other related VIPs has doubled since 2014 and the highest risk has almost tripled in the last two years from five in 2020 to 13 in 2022.

Royal Family at risk

In 2014, Police were monitoring 73 people who could be of risk to the Royal Family. However, the new data released under the Freedom of Information Act showed that Police monitored 202 individuals by the end of 2022 and specialist officers have dealt with more than 1,000 risk cases since 2016.

The substantial increase has caused alarm, especially in the current scenario when King Charles’ coronation is just around the corner, confirmed MailOnline. The coronation is set to take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey. Dai Davies, a former head of royal protection for Scotland Yard, confirmed:

This rise is alarming but I fear these figures are just the tip of the iceberg. There will always be deranged people who want to do harm to the Royal Family.

The difficult job for the police is determining which of them have the means and determination to actually go through with any plan.

Here’s how the risk is evaluated!

The Fixated Threat Assessment Centre is the multi-agency team that has been monitoring risk to the Royal Family. Each year the team receives around 1,000 referrals regarding individuals who have engaged in ‘abnormal communications’ with Royals or any other prominent people in public life or attempted to make ‘inappropriate contact.’

Scotland Yard’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command refers the potential risk people to the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre and they categorise them into different categories. The threat posed is graded from low to high based on a ‘stalking risk profile’ by forensic psychologists and psychiatrists who look at their behaviour, any prior convictions and risk of violence.
