Although her Disney days are long behind her, Vanessa Hudgens has not forgotten her artistic origins. The singer and actress slipped several references to the cult High School Musical series into the music video for her new track, Lay With Me.

For many teenagers of the 2000s, Vanessa Hudgens will forever be Gabriella Montez from High School Musical. Although the 29-year-old star has managed to break away from the Disney label by taking on roles in such feature films as Sucker Punch, Spring Breakers and Machete Kills, she will never totally let her fans forget her debut in the trilogy, in which she starred alongside Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale, who are now also all grown up.

Although she is now moving towards much more adult projects and continues to expand her acting range, Vanessa Hudgens has not forgotten her debut on the Disney Channel. The actress and singer has written a song with the electronic band Phantoms entitled Lay With Me, whose clip is reminiscent of the first episode of High School Musical, which gathered more than 7.7 million viewers during its first broadcast in 2006.

In the video for the Phantoms’ song, which is likely to become a hit, Vanessa Hudgens can be seen singing in front of a crowd of high school students. The clip evokes the scene in which she sang Breaking Free as a duet with Zac Efron of course on an extremely similar stage, with the audience reacting in the same way. A few seconds are enough for us to remember with a certain nostalgia the perfection that was Gabriella and Troy Bolton. This clip is clearly enough to inspire the desire to plunge back into the trilogy, turning the volume up and singing along of course.

For the more sensitive souls however… in the clip the singer seems to have also wanted to ‘shatter’ her image of the good little girl…
