Shakira and long-time boyfriend Gerard Piqué announce their separation

In a heart-breaking statement on 4 June, the couple announced that the two have parted ways. Shakira and football player Gerard Piqué met on the sets of her music video Waka Waka (This time for Africa) in 2010.

It’s over

The two officially confirmed their relationship in 2011 and have been together ever since. The 45-year-old star and Gerard share two sons together - Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7. According to Entertainment Tonight, the couple has issued a joint statement confirming the split. The statement released by Shakira’s public relations firm read:

We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.

This comes after the Spanish newspaper EL PERIÓDICO reported that Shakira caught Gerard cheating on her. The publication also confirmed that the two had been living separately and the 35-year-old player is staying in a bachelor pad away from his family.

Music is a solace

Things appeared to be growing pretty well for the couple until Valentine’s Day and she even posted a loved-up photo of the two together. However, her latest song with Rauw Alejandro dubbed ‘Te Felicito’ – Congratulations offered clues that there has been some trouble in paradise. The song when translated to English says:

For completing you I broke into pieces. They warned me, but I did not pay attention. I realized that yours is false. It was the drop that overflowed the glass.

Don't tell me you're sorry, that seems sincere, but I know you well and I know you lie.

Despite the reports, neither of the celebrities have posted anything on their social media officially. The two still continue to follow each other and the loved-up photos stay intact on their feeds.
