Justin Bieber: Here’s what you need to know about the syndrome that has left half of his face paralysed

The 28-year-old Canadian singer had to postpone his US tour for the third time since 2020. Telling his fans over an Instagram story and wrote:

Can't believe I'm saying this. I've done everything to get better but my sickness is getting worse.

What is wrong with Justin Bieber?

This announcement about the mystery illness is now disclosed by Justin as Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. Talking to his fans and followers in a three-minute-long video on Instagram, he said:

As you can probably see by my face... I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt.

As you can see this eye is not blinking. I can't smile on this side of my face... So there's full paralysis on this side of my face.

According to medical professionals, Ramsay Hunt syndrome occurs when a shingles epidemic damages the facial nerve between the ears.

He added:

This is pretty serious as you can see. I wish this wasn't the case, but, obviously, my body's telling me I've got to slow down.

What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a neurological illness caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, which causes inflammation of facial nerves. When nerves become inflamed, they lose their ability to function, resulting in facial paralysis or palsy. According to mayoclinic.org, it can also cause hearing loss in the affected ear and is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Justin shared in his video:

It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome can be treated early to lessen the risk of symptoms, such as irreversible facial muscle paralysis and hearing. Most symptoms of the disease are temporary but can become permanent. It can happen to anyone who has had chicken pox and is usually more common in older adults over 60. However rare, it can still happen to children and young adults. The syndrome isn’t contagious but it can be severe for people who have immune system problems. Bieber went on to say that he's been performing facial exercises to get back to normal, but he doesn't know how long it will take.
